In 2018, Apple put built-in screen recording on its Mojave operating system (and imposed severe restrictions on third-party screen recording apps). A screenshot is a helpful software that records any video (and audio!) that you see on your screen. You’ll be able to use this function if you have macOS Mojave or a later version.
Having an older Mac or not updating your operating system in a while shouldn’t be a problem. QuickTime may still be used to record displays. The following options are available to you.

You may record your computer screen using a screenshot.
The screenshot is available in Mojave, Catalina, and subsequent macOS versions.
- On your keyboard, simultaneously press command, shift, and 5. You will see a screenshot appear. The Screenshot control bar is located at the bottom of your screen. Alternatively, you can record a video or take a still screenshot. There is a little circle recording icon on the logo that indicates which options are for video recording.
- You have the option of recording the full screen or only a part of it. The recording window will show a box with the option to move and resize it if you choose to record only part of your screen.
- To discover what additional preferences you have, click “Options.”. You can set a countdown timer, choose which microphone to use, and decide where to save your recording, for instance.
- It’s time to record now that you’ve chosen your selections. From the options, pick “Record.” You may also start recording by clicking anywhere on the screen if you’re recording the full screen. You’ll notice the timer counting down till the recording starts if you’ve opted to use it. Instead, the recording will begin right away.
- Click the stop button in the upper right corner of your screen’s menu bar to stop recording. You may also stop recording by pressing command, control, and ESC. You can also press command, shift, 5, and the screenshot bar will appear with a stop button you can click. You will find a stop button in the upper left corner of your Touch Bar.
- In the lower-right corner of your screen, you’ll see a thumbnail of the video once you stop recording. The recording will automatically be saved to the location you’ve set as a QuickTime movie (MOV) if you swipe the thumbnail to the right or do nothing.
- Drag the thumbnail to the desired folder to move the recording. By dragging it into an open window, you can also insert it into an email or document.
- Click the thumbnail to see even more options. The location where the recording is saved can be changed, it can be opened in a specific app, or it can be deleted.
Ensure you trim your recording
Clicking on the thumbnail when it appears will open the recording, allowing you to edit it. You can open the thumbnail by clicking on the file and then hitting the spacebar if it has already been saved to your desired location. Alternatively, you can open it in Quicktime by double-clicking it or right-clicking it and selecting “Open With > QuickTime”).
The trim icon is located in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. You can trim the video by clicking that icon.
Draw the editing bar at the bottom of the screen to the desired frame, where you’d like the video to begin and end. Hit the Play button to preview your edited clip.
Trimmed too much? In the upper right corner of your window, press the “Revert” button. The trimmed clip can then be either replaced or saved as a new one by clicking “Done”.
You may record your screen using QuickTime.
You may also record your screen with QuickTime Player, which may be your only choice if you’re using an older version of macOS. Here’s how to put it to good use.
- Launch the QuickTime Player software.
- Select “File” from the top menu. If the QuickTime icon is in your Dock, you may also right-click it. From the drop-down option, select “New Screen Recording.”
- “Screen Recording” will show as a popup window. You’ll see an arrow next to the red record button that leads to a dropdown menu list with choices for showing mouse clicks and selecting which microphone to use for audio. Later, you’ll be able to pick where you want to store your video.
- Drag the pointer to resize or adjust the recording window to record only an area of the screen. To record the entire screen, click anywhere on it.
- In the center of the window, click the “Start Recording” button.
- When you’re ready to stop recording, go to the top menu bar and click the little, square stop button. To end recording, use command, control, or ESC.
You may modify and save a QuickTime recording.
- QuickTime will immediately open the video when you’ve finished recording. To save the video, go to the “File” menu and choose a location The screen recording will be saved as a MOV file there.. (You may be able to edit or rotate your QuickTime movie on some operating systems.)
- Locate the file, then click on it to highlight it. To launch a preview window, press the spacebar. The icons in the upper right menu will allow you to rotate or trim the video.
- To rotate the video clip, simply press the rotate button. Simply shut the window to save it.
- Trim the clip by pressing the trim symbol. Drag the editing bar to the desired frame where you want the movie to start and stop from the bottom of the screen. By using the Play button, you can see how your altered clip looks.
- Have you gotten out of hand with the editing? On the upper right of your window, press the “Revert” button. Otherwise, click “Done,” and the edited clip will either replace or save as a new one, depending on your preference.
